Welcome from this year’s Christkind, Aimee Calderon

I’ve lived in Germany a couple of times in my life, and have always enjoyed going to the Christmas markets there.  The warmth and smell of the Gluhwein, the sausages, the stands with pretty ornaments for sale, all bring back happy memories for me. It was always a sign that Christmas was coming.  I welcome you to this year’s Christkindlfest at Ascension Lutheran Church, and I hope our that our celebration will stir in you those same feelings of fun, fellowship and anticipation for Christmas and give you memories for years to come.

CHRISTKINDL FEATURES

Jeff Courtright’s Huts!

When you arrive at this year’s Christkindl Fest at Ascension, you’ll notice a few more items that will remind you of an authentic German holiday experience. These sweet, German village facades are made by Jeff Courtright with support from his grandchildren. Jeff says he loves to share his construction trade and his gifts. “My father was a carpenter and passed away when I was young but he showed me how to build and serve,” reflects Jeff.

Jeff’s father also gave him his tools which he often uses on special occasions. “As I gathered up my tools to build the huts, I grabbed my father’s framing square to build in his honor,” says Jeff. “He used to say if the church asked for help, volunteer.” Courtright is grateful for the example his dad set for him in giving back to the church and community and continues the example with his own family. “I was taught, now I teach,” comments Jeff.

Courtright is excited for this year’s Christkindl Fest and can’t wait for you to see the German hut facades up and strung with lights. “I believe we’re all kids at heart,” says Jeff, “and I hope this year’s Christkindl Fest brings you back to your childhood.”

Meet the Chef of this Year’s Fest – Pete Krieg

Pete Krieg’s grandfather and great uncle came over from Germany in 1911. His great uncle was a trained butcher who settled in North Dakota and his grandfather was a trained baker who started out in Cincinnati. His grandfather got a letter from his brother stating he needed help in his butcher shop where his grandfather learned a new trade, a trade he shared with Pete’s dad. Pete grew up making sausage and bacon as part of a family tradition. Pete now has a small business doing custom processing for different game animals which have included elk, deer, buffalo and more.
